Moving to a new host.

Hi. Just an update. I’m moving my blog to a new hosting company.

WordPress.com is just too expensive and I don’t want to be nickled and dimed for features that should be standard on the WP platform.

If you still want to follow my blog please check out the new one. StephendelMar.com

Writing Florida Style

My writing studio.

My writing studio.

It has been a busy few months and I’ve been feeling an itch that tells me I need to get to the beach. I also need to get caught up on my writing, so I decided to do a bit of both. For some reason I had forgotten that my laptop can work at a place other than the library or Starbucks. I can squeeze out three hours without a plug so I partook of some Florida style writing this morning. Such a nice January morning.

Chuck Wendig: 25 Ways to Survive as a Creative Person

Just ran across a post by Mr. Wendig about keeping the creative life going. A fun and insightful read.  The language is a bit crude but that made if kind of fun for me. Link.

NaNo Rap Up

bowlingMy NaNo region had our “It’s Over Party” this afternoon. A few of us gathered at the bowling ally. Kind of nice to socialize with other writers. Normal people just don’t get your issues with plot or unruly characters. I am thinking I really need to join one of the Writer’s Associations here.

Anyway, I am set up at Starbucks, I have my white chocolate mocha and I am ready to crank out the words!

Pax!

Post NaNo Update

Sad Day.

Just got home from the night job and realized the clock had rolled over to December 7th. Some date. For me, the day means Pearl Harbor. My country’s entry into a World War. War that never seems to end. May humanity someday figure out that it is better to share the bananas rather than fight over them, but then we are limited by who and what we are.

Sigh.

Then on the more mundane level, NaNo has been over for a week.

Kind of an interesting week. I slept in some. Tried to catch up on some paid work. (My main job is freelance video production–more fun than the nigh job from hell but the money is inconsistent.) Dealt with a low grade respiratory infection that I embellished to get out of a social occasion and kept hacking away on the Novel.

I’ve gotten another 5K words done. I really want to bring it to a close but the character’s aren’t helping, they keep doing unexpected things, which was cute for a while, but now is just annoying.  They just don’t seem to understand or even care that I need to end this thing because it is going to take months to edit this sucker!

Sigh, again.

Well it is now one in the morning and I need to get some writing in.

Peace and blessings to you.

50K: I did it!

I did it!

I did it and on day 28 no less! Story isn’t done and there is so much editing to do even to get to a decent draft, but I have 50k words in the can! I really didn’t think I could do it.

I’m buying a hat!

Simpsons on Writing a Book

I enjoy the Simpsons but haven’t watched them in a while. Came across this episode. I thought it was appropriate for NaNo month.

Day 25.1

Well it’s 8:30 or so and I am back at Starbucks. The staff is starting to recognize me.  I only got about 4 or 5 hours of sleep, not good–I’m the kind of guy that really needs his 8 or 10, but I got up about 7 and really felt the need to get out and write.

I don’t know why I can’t write at home. It would sure as hell be cheaper. I am trying to ignore the mounting cost of venti white chocolate mochas.

And why I am trying to wake up and clear the cobwebs and rambling in a stream of unconscious… What the hell is up with the attitude some people give you about trying to write a book?

I admit that the defensiveness may be my issue or that I seem to be associating with people who can barely read let alone write. But when I share I am trying to do this thing where you try to write 50K words on a first draft of a novel in 30 days they ask why. And it is not the “Why, that sounds interesting how did you come to do that?” It’s more like “Why that is stupid.”

People never ask why you are going home to play video games, watch TV, clean your guns or beat your wife (I do live in the south) do they?

Why am I trying to write a novel?

Because I want to.

Well that was an interesting rant. I wonder how that will read when I am functioning again. I really need a hat.  Aha, anyway, I only have like 12K words left to hit the finish line. Damn the aquatic launched projectiles I will do this by tomorrow.

Okay, time to spell check this sucker and get writing. I have all of these dead bodies and I have no idea who is shooting them. Maybe the cops do, I don’t know. And my MC is cracking up. I am bringing in a shrink. And a second rung character is in the hospital and he needs to get better so he can go to that concert where he nearly gets date raped. And then Molly still has to have her baby. We need to find out why Danny is upset and becoming a drunk. And why is Dillon going out-of-town every time he has a few days off. And people think small towns are nice and quite. Oh and will Aidan stop being a dick to JJ? I hope so, it is annoying me.

Day 25

Well it is 2:09 am. I’ve gotten in 1,751 words since midnight and I am beat.

I hit 38,598 words. I just might be able to do this. I really only have two more days to write because next week will be busy. Can I do 12K in two days?

Of course that will just be hitting the NaNo goal. Still a lot to go on the novel. It is coming in nicely but I think the draft will be around 80-100K when done. Then the editing begins! What fun.

Okay fans, good night.
